Ravi Pradosha Pooja is a special Vedic ritual dedicated to Lord Shiva, observed during the Pradosham
period that falls on a Sunday (Ravi in Sanskrit). Pradosham is a significant time that occurs twice a
month, during the Trayodashi Tithi (13th day) of both the waxing and waning moon phases.
When Pradosham coincides with a Sunday, it is called Ravi Pradosha and is considered
highly auspicious.
Significance of Ravi Pradosha Pooja
- Sunday is associated with the Sun God (Surya), representing vitality, health, and sm-leadership
- Worshiping Lord Shiva on this day is believed to bring relief from ailments, grant spiritual growth, and remove karmic debts
- It is also believed to bring prosperity and longevity
When is it Performed?
- Timing: Pradosham is observed approximately 1.5 hours before and after sunset
- Frequency: Twice a month, but when it falls on a Sunday, it carries special significance
Key Rituals Involved
- Purification: Take a holy bath and wear clean clothes
- Altar Setup: Place an idol or image of Lord Shiva along with Goddess Parvati and Nandi. A Shivlingam can also be used
- Offering: Light lamps, burn incense, and decorate with fresh flowers
- Abhishekam: Perform a sacred bath (Abhisheka) of the Shivlingam using milk, honey, curd, ghee, and water
- Mantra Chanting: Chant powerful Shiva mantras like the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra or Om Namah Shivaya
- Panchamrit Offering: Offer a mixture of milk, curd, ghee, honey, and sugar
- Bilva Leaves Offering: Bilva leaves are dear to Lord Shiva and are offered in multiples of three
- Aarti and Prasad: Conclude the pooja with aarti and distribute the prasad
